Awesome Foundation Ottawa

I’ve heard that you should be the change you want to see in the world.

Well, I would like the world to be more AWESOME.

It’s time to take action on that, and I have a plan.

There’s this thing that was started up in Boston last year called the Awesome Foundation. Basically, it’s a group of 10 philanthropists who every month give a $1000 grant ($100 each) to someone who is doing something awesome, there are now chapters in New York (with Clay Shirky and Caterina Fake) and Providence too. Check out their blog, but past awards have included:

I’m looking for people who want to be part of this. Get in touch if you’re interested or have any questions – I’ll be talking with Tim Hwang (who came up with this amazing idea) this week. I’ll update below with questions and answers!

To get in touch – you can comment here, catch me on Twitter (I’m @kittenthebad) or contact me via gmail or wave – I’m catehuston.

Q&A

Would this be a charity?

No, so I’m sorry it’s probably not going to be a tax-deductible. But, because of that there’s no tedious registration or time delay – as soon as we have 10 people we are GO. Also, there’s no need to have a bank account or anything like that, as each person transfers to the recipient individually.

This sounds really cool, but I can’t afford it.

We’ve rationalize that this is about the cost of cable, and way more exciting. But still, not everyone will be able to make this commitment. That’s OK, please consider passing this on to anyone who you think might be interested and stay posted for what happens when we’ve recruited the rest of our Board of Awesome.

I heard of the Awesome foundation last year, but I couldn't think of any projects I could possibly qualify for.

As it is, I'm excited to get potatoes at twenty cents a pound, so I don't yet have the means.
I'd like to start planning a chapter in Winnipeg, later in the year, though! (Unfortunately, I don't know of many good web people in Winnipeg.)

That’s great! I’m thinking to organize a meeting where prospective board members can get together and discuss, so I’ll let you know about that 🙂

Great! We should be having a get together on the 8th for prospective board members 🙂

Update – We’ve had enough interest that I’m organizing for all the people interested in being board members to get together next Thursday (April 8th) at 1830 at the code factory. Yay!

alright so I know that the Awesome Foundation is meeting at the Code Factory April 8th-but my question is what time? I have worked with Ian in the past and he told me all about this opportunity. Should be a fun one.

I just found out about this fantastic initiative from Ian @TheCodeFactory. Just knowing that someone is taking the initiative to be the catalyst for imagination and innovation gives me renewed energy and motivation to do my part.

Keep me in the loop on your progress!

Was this only three months ago? Funny how much things can change in such a short time.

I've found a large group of creative people, landed a great job, and find myself thinking more and more about how I can improve things. (In reverse order, that.)

I've set the wheels in motion to create an Awesome chapter in Winnipeg, and I want to know if there were any odd things that came up for you that you never expected.
Also, do you know anyone in Winnipeg who sound interested in Awesome? I've talked to a few people, and I've got at least one extra trustee, so it's all baby steps right now.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Michael that's great! If you want to email me, I can put you in touch with the people in Boston. I don't know anyone in Winnipeg myself, sadly, but can definitely put the word out amongst our trustees – maybe someone will? I use gmail, and it's catehuston.

Congrats on the job!! 🙂
